Our Story

Dealing with death is not an easy task. Whether it be our Client-Families, our own family, friends, or within the community, relationships must come before money.

When a loved one transitions, it can be anticipatory or it can be sudden. Either makes a drastic impact on those left behind to deal with the death. Having a funeral home that understands and listens to what is said and what is not is very, very crucial. It is really surprising how many times client-families select our independently family-owned and operated funeral home and express that they had no idea we were open or in the community, but were referred by another family. They continue to say how they feel we care and educate them on how to have a beautiful celebration of life ceremony as well, and embrace that grieving is real and it has to be accepted, no matter how long it takes to get through it.

Our owner is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer who graduated from an accredited Mortuary Science College in St. Louis, Missouri, and passed the National Service Board of Education to obtain licensing. She began serving Colorado communities at the former Caldwell-Kirk Mortuary for approximately 10 1/2 years under the leadership/owner Elvin R. Caldwell, Jr.

With over 30 years of experience in the medical industry as a former Registered Nurse and still today in the death care industry, this allows the staff to understand the importance of making sure each client-family we serve, as well as interacting with other death-related entities, encounters a pleasant and compassionate interaction.

The staff of Shannon & Malone Chapel of Peace Funeral Home and Cremation Services is comprised of people who serve in various entities within the communities and throughout the State of Colorado, with many being veterans of the armed forces, ministers, and pastors.

In 2015, our owner, family, and staff experienced a major tragedy, the loss of her daughter at the age of 30 years old. Not being able to have the opportunity to kiss her own daughter “Good-Bye” left a gut-wrenching impact on her daily thoughts. This took years for her to find peace within, while being a light to others, comforting others, and serving others. Until you lose a loved one, you have no idea what it takes for those left behind to process the loss, let alone resume everyday living and tasks.

The funeral home is the continuation of life for the client's families. The responsibility to be concerned, listen, plan, comfort, and educate is our sole responsibility. Competition is NOT on our minds, nor do we participate in the antics of it. We at Shannon & Malone Chapel of Peace Funeral Home are here to serve. At the death of our former Vice-President, the late Ashley, there were several funeral homes that came together to serve and comfort our owner, family, and staff. This is what serving is supposed to be and what it looks like.

We strive to keep our prices economical for everyone, regardless of your socioeconomic status. In today’s world, prices are increasing, and they are affecting the funeral home industry just as they are affecting everyday living. We completely understand how important it is that client-families use life insurance and finances wisely. Sitting with a Funeral Director should be an easy thing to do, not stressful or frustrating. We educate each family that gives them information to carry them through after the services, and they can explain to others who may need us later, why they selected our firm.

In 2014, NOMIS, a national publication directory for funeral homes and cemeteries, honored our owner as being the First Licensed Black Female Mortician with an independently owned and operated funeral home in Colorado. This was a great accomplishment. As a child, she would have funerals for her toys and bury them in her father’s garden. Becoming a Mortician was a calling at the young age of 10 years old. When you are doing your passion, you serve with a heart of sincerity, honesty, compassion, and order. This is what makes what we do different. Being resourceful extends beyond the profit of the business. Knowing what is changing and impacting others makes us understand how to serve, educate, be profitable, and at the same time make a difference with the impact to help.

Being aware of the changes in the death care industry has helped our firm understand the financial challenges that are being encountered. Oftentimes, client-families panic when there is no life insurance, not enough, and the money is limited. This causes added stress to the grieving. We continue to encourage the communities to teach the importance of having life insurance that will cover the costs of the funeral home, cremation, and cemeteries. The average cost of a full service in Colorado is approximately $15,000-$25,000.00. Each region is different; the cost in New York is approximately $30,000-$50,000.00, and southern and northern states are a bit less, but not much. International Shipping has drastically increased, and the airlines have increased their prices as well. Some think cremation is a lesser value; however, it is increasing monthly. Prices are subject to change, and this imposes a great impact on the funeral homes, crematories, casket companies, and other funeral and death care-related entities.
